Sugarbeet, Fish And Moss

Today I went to the sea again – heavy icecold wind from the South blew into my face – making me strong that’s what I thought, making me long for softer spring breezes even more, please, spring, come! Yes, she answered, I’m on my way, don’t you see the little sprouties everywhere?

One tough guy went straight into the water, a fisherman. I learned new Swedish fish words today: Havsöring, ål, spätta, torsk, makrill. Sad that you should better not eat them since they are full of dioxin and PCB. Overfished anyway.

My little house is surrounded by sugarbeet fields! Also I found a lot of bright coloured moss on the ground and on rocks. I think they will be my next film developer …

Mendocino Spezial

Come to the CLUB tomorrow (Club 39, Manteuffelstr. 39 close to subway Görlitzer Bahnhof), my favourite bar in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Showing films and playing some very weird records together with Michel – we are the DJ team Superlux 3000 which is originally the name of a super 8 projector … to fill the circle and spread an analogue mood.

Moon Rabbit

Moon Rabbit, that’s the translation of the Korean word Dal Tokki! Dal Tokki is the name of a lovely little Korean restaurant in Berlin-Wedding, Prinzenallee 83, close to U-Bahn station Pankstrasse. They offer home made lunch, just one dish consisting of salad, soup, main dish. Changing every day. Always 8 €. And they serve a delicious yellow „Maistee“ – corn tea, roasted! And sell home made kimchi!

“Jedenfalls ist das Essen, das die Hasen bereiten, so rund wie der Vollmond selbst. Es fällt vom Planeten hinunter direkt auf unsere Teller. Dal Tokkis stampfen und backen und backen und stampfen. Im Takt der Hasen essen wir, was Hasen für uns kochen. Vom Mond direkt in die Stadt. Urban Korean Food ist planetarisch.”

“In any case, the food that the rabbits prepare is as round as the full moon itself. It falls directly from the planet onto our plates. Dal Tokkis stomp and bake and bake and stomp. We eat what rabbits cook for us in the same rhythm. From the moon straight into the city. Urban Korean Food is planetary.”

The Perfection Of The Mosquito

I don’t know why but I think a lot about the universe, nature, karma, magic, animals, fun, sense, reason, abundance, sundance … and now that the second half of my sabbatical year has begun (lucky me) I find so much time to edit some films I always wanted to finish. This greenish old Agfa super 8 film that I shot about 2 years ago: frogs and rape seed fields and me drawing animals and my brother coming running from the lake and flowers and water ripples …

Now there’s a film called „Die Perfekton der Mücke / The Perfection of the Mosquito“ which is a bit esoteric, a bit kitschy, green and fun and sugarsweet music (self-made – ha!).

Enjoy! Watch here the German version and here the English!!!

Yksi Kaksi Kolme

Sometimes films just fall from heaven. I was ready, trees were sugared, friend was happy to help with camera, the dung heap – all odor and vapor. I count to three, yksi kaksi kolme in Finnish, so beautiful words, resembling to nothing else!
And the film came.
Double, triple exposed, two Dagies, three Dagies and my ever questioning how the hell does the universe ticktocktackle??

Here’s the film (German)

Here’s the film (English)

Ode To June 7

“Ode an Juni” is a kind of infinite life work shot on Super 8.
In 2008, I started to capture June, my ultimately favorite month, in picture and sound.
Diary film, Berlin portrait, life excerpt, colorful poem, something like that now every year.

Number 7 from this year’s June is almost ready!!!!!
I am just about to edit the credits!

Update: Here it is!!!

Kino z fusów – Kaffeesatz – Coffee Grounds

I was invited to give a workshop in Warsaw at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art last weekend. Pure pleasure! Great group of 7 people, one day intense super 8 … filming and developing in good old coffee and nice new chrysanthemum juice! Chrysanthemum! Flower of the dead, used only for funerals or on graves (at least in some European countries), flower of the dead month November … we transformed it into something living, pulsating fresh analog film.

Oakland Day #1

Oops! Suddenly I am on another planet. Car dominated too, but louder. Different colours, many colours, warmer wind, more palm trees. Gentrification buzzing in real time. A Russian truck with yummy Russian Food: Pelmeny! Beer breweries everywhere. One millimeter, sorry: inch! away: many many homeless tents. A little Kreuzberg feeling coming up. No, much tougher, I guess. Do I like it here? Yes!
