Ø

Antje Øklesund is a cool venue. Antje Øklesund is a cool woman.
Berlin is a cool city that hosts cool bands. No, not cool >> heartwarming. Summerkeeping.

Tonight there was a secret concert called „Quixote back in Berlin with Zulu Pearls and Heidi Heidelberg“ – Heidi H is American with a giant voice and a hippiesk middle parting. One woman one guitar, how hard is it to be one of 6474837 singer songwriter women, to be individual? I don’t know, but her voice is thrilling and I liked her 7 songs especially the one about her lover telling her too often that he loves her … (Me: how poor in words, how great in music!) and >>> her version of Heard It Through The Grapevine is divine.

Next: nice pop guys called Zulu Pearls, summer ice cream music … and the sound (guy) of Antje is just fantastic.

Quixote is a Berlin / London based band that I heard before (they are part of Khanis Bands On Boats project) and I must say they definitely hide 3 or 4 fat smash hits in their miracle box — The Big Bad Man is the devil — and it smashed me 64748 years back when I was a tiny girl, working on a production line for Miele Waschautomaten (washing machines and dryers) in Gütersloh — 6 months heavy work and all we had was a little radio and I fought hard for BFBS because they broadcasted the finest music (the mighty John Peel for example who changed my life to good) — I’ll never forget the day when they played This Charming Man by the Smiths for the very first time, it just jumped on me like a little red demon and threw me down breathlessly … same with the Big Bad Man … good luck Quixote! Good luck Antje!

And by the way ….. wasn’t that one of the most gigantic songs ever: What Difference Does It Make?? (helped me survive my fucking youth @ countryside)

Dead End Dresden To Vienna

Berlin-Kreuzberg’s Dresdener Strasse has a dead end where tourists never go: quiet and a bit lost …
go there and find a new peaceful yummy Vienna café called Ganz Wien run by a real Vienna lady who stranded in Berlin 8 years ago.
It is a lovely place with great coffees and all kinds of snacks, breakfast and more.
I had a Schmankerl? Stöberl? … can’t really remember but it was just right for my mini hunger: ham tarte with pickled cucumber and little onions for only 3.50 €.

Kodachrome Solution

Yes!
Success!
I processed the almost unprocessable Kodachrome K40 super 8 film! Black&white negative.
Color processing is impossible (secret 13 baths recipe), Kodak stopped processing a long time ago and Dwaynes, the last lab in the world, stopped end last year.
So now, everybody who still has one of the legendary material in their fridge: do it yourself!
Better b&w negative than nothing!

Localize Me

LOCALIZE Das Heimatfestival 2011 – A festival of City, Art, Culture in Potsdam, 4th year, my first time of participation – I was invited with my film Turn Baby Turn to be part of a short film program.
Films about (feeling, being, missing, constructing, exploring) HOME, experimental, political, private … a very creative mixture of 10 works!

What a lovely event! Happy audience, well organized enthusiastic nice and cool organizers – everything inside and in front of legendary Potsdam Film Museum!
I had a great evening and I found two new friends, filmmaker ladies Marie-Catherine and Lisa!
Plus … I won the Sonderpreis der Universität Potsdam (special mention!), connected with 100 Euro which I’m going to spend immediately and buy some fresh super 8 film cassettes.
Yeeeehaaaaaaa thank you!!!!!

A Language Without A “B”

While I was in Greece I tried to learn a little, tried to read the letters …
I learned that they have no B! And what do they do to fake a B? Use “MP”! Which comes pretty close, check it out, say Mpus instead of Bus. Say Mpampy instead of Baby …
Crazy, isn’t it?

Here’s a sign of a Restaurant … try to find “Club Sandwich”! [Λ is L / ∏ is P / ∑ is S / OY is like OO …] 😉

Admiral Bridge Beauties

The Admiralbrücke in Berlin-Kreuzberg has been a meeting point for some years now – a cool place to hang – live music makers and enjoyers, sunset watchers, party people, tourists, beerdrinkers and beerbottle smashers … I live just around the corner and pass by every now and then. Today I found some fresh written doodles, nice, artsy, funny, make more!

Here’s an english article (radio) about the pros and cons of this popular bridge. Sleepless in Kreuzberg …

Wabisabi Super 8 Workshop In Berlin

Playing in the park, animating things and ourselves, havin fun with the Nizo camera and getting to know it while filming … that was day 1 of my 2 days workshop!!
It is always so interesting and full of energy to see how a group forms … only 2 days and we’re all having a community feeling like sitting in one boat … and creativity and joy multiply!

Beauty In Chocolate

Yesterday I helped my friend Khani with some filming for her miraculous Bands On Boats project in the Schokoladen (a nice venue – chocolate shop is the name, music is inside) – hanging a super 8 camera from the ceiling and filming a little around (video) … focussed on the lovely band Quixote.
They really amazed me. Awesome talented guys from London, now living in Berlin for better vibes and surviving reasons I guess. The singer has a voice that melts icebergs. I look into my magic crystal ball and see a bright future for them!

Spuntini

What a yummy word! Italian for treat. Lecker Imbiss in German!

There’s a tiny restaurant in my neighbourhood called Primo Maggio (May 1st) – I enjoyed a late Easter minimal breakfast with my brother (perfect for a medium hungry person: Colazione „Bella Ciao“ which is 1 butter-dripping croissant, 1 fantastic coffee, 1 glass of fresh orange juice for 4.50 €).

Mediterranean feeling inside and outside!

To A Friend

Sterben ist Scheisse, why the fuck do have friends to die?

This is for Fred who was my supporter and my friend in my super 8 universe for sooooo many years!

Left above picture: incredible blue sky in Berlin-Neukölln today, Fred’s memorial party tonight, hot sun, straight colours, clear vision, smiling neighbours, angels flights, blackbirds tweets ….. I need one more rosé … drink on / for love ………

A Spider With Cold Feet

My little family (nephew, brother) and me went on a trip to the outskirts of the city – on the hunt again for imaginary treasures and real lost places (see www.geocaching.com), a cool way to explore and find places and spaces you’d never go without your navi 😉

Nephew David forgot his camera at home so he asked me to take a photo of his spooky discovery: a spider on ice!

Rotterdam Reunite And Summer Feelings In A Train

Paolo, me, and Lisa met in Rotterdam!
This is an intimate message for those who know! They are my American (super-8-) friends who run one of the most magical places on earth – the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles! Yeeha! What a wonderful time we had walking over shaky bridges (pre spring stormy weather!), filming, counting rabbits … sharing and renewing our friendship!

On my train ride back to Berlin I discovered some poetic words / decoration … don’t understand much but it made me smile thinking about coming back, confetti and returning summer feelings!

And this is a cool sandwich vending machine found at Rotterdam Centraal train station!

Blue Sheep

Recently I was in Dresden, beautiful city, overflowing river, funny train station called „Wild Man“ … I held a workshop there at one of my most favourite short film festivals called „Schmallfilmtage / Small format days“. Woke up, looked out of the window, rubbed my eyes: blue sheep!

Inspiration. Colors. Next Wabisabi workshop will be in Berlin, in May. Check out wabisabisuper8.com from time to time …

Music Kisses Image

Connection of music and film. How I love it! My films can’t exist without music or rhythmic sound. When I listen to a tune and close my eyes the images come, whirl inside of me, begin a life of their own. Just can’t help it, they are always connected and kiss each other! Hey, romantic me! The snow just melted away and I can smell pre-spring coming!

Anyway … David Thomas, American clarinetist and soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra hired me to create a film for one of his music pieces. Called „Arabesques“. And the images start to roll. And rock 😉 My home is my animation studio, I carry my Nizo camera with me when I go out , I’m a hunter and collector!
